Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway turned down the lead role in upcoming movie Alice In Wonderland as she was tired of her “pretty girl” image. The 27-year-old actress was asked to star as Alice in the Tim Burton-directed film but opted to play the White Queen instead.
She had previously played a pretty protagonist in The Princess Diaries movies which launched her career and didn’t want to do similar roles, reported GQ magazine. “The studio had the script a long time ago and I was approached back then for the part of Alice. I considered it, but felt, what with The Princess Diaries, that I had been there, done that sort of pretty-girl-in-a-fairy-dress role. I told the studio, however, that I would be interested at a later date in playing the White Queen,” said Hathaway.
The role of Alice eventually went to Australian newcomer Mia Wasikowska, but Hathaway has no regrets about her decision. “When Tim came on board he had the cast he wanted and, of course, that didn’t include me. But the other actress who was marked had scheduling conflicts, so the studio piped up and put me forward. I talked on the phone with Tim and he really liked my take. I wanted the Queen to be a cross between Debbie Harry, Greta Garbo, David Bowie, with (a) little bit of the work of Dan Flavin thrown in for good measure,” said the actress.

ANNE Hathaway insists she never dreamed about becoming a star.
The Devil Wears Prada beauty says she never imagined she’d become famous, and credits her her parents with inspiring her acting ambitions at an early age.
“We were focused on theater,” Anne said of her family. “I never dreamed about being a star or having my name up in lights. Creativity was encouraged in our family household, embraced even.
“I would walk around singing all day, doing scenes, pretending all day long. My two brothers loved that. My parents never said, ‘Pipe down!’ or ‘Quit that racket!’
“I never had particularly romantic feelings about acting. My mother helped with that. I saw it as a job. An option.”
Hathaway, 27, recently revealed that she’s obsessed with reading physics textbooks.
“I’m interested in elementary particles,” she told Britain’s GQ magazine.
“What I like thinking about is how time and space exist in the universe and how we understand it. Any spare time I have I bury my head in a physics textbook.
“What I also think is fascinating is that the elements at the atomic and subatomic level make-up everything. You, me, the buildings, our souls, our minds. Remember I’m living in Los Angeles, so I’m interested in energies and vibes. Look, it’s not a very polished argument but I’m learning.”

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Oscar-nominated actress Anne Hathaway has received a good-natured ribbing from Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals student drama troupe.
The group’s Woman of the Year was honoured Thursday with a parade down Massachusetts Avenue near the university followed by a roast where she received her pudding pot from Harvard men in drag.
She joins a distinguished list of past recipients that includes Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Meryl Streep.
Hathaway was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress in 2009 for her role in “Rachel Getting Married.”
After the parade, Hathaway was roasted on stage in typical Hasty Pudding Theatricals fashion where then she slew a “dragon.”
